Besides the FIFA World Cup, what are the other Soccer Championships and how often are they contested?

I have always followed the FIFA World Cup games and Series A and B soccer in Italy. But I have never understood the other championships that invade my peripheral vision. Is there not a championship for the professional teams?

  1. in each continent they have different champion ships. they held every 4 years as well, but they always are held any time that dosn't have conflict with world cup. for example Uro 2004 was 2 years ago, and they had so many fun games. they are mostly exciting. after world cup, uero championship is the most popular one.
  2. You have two types of competitions: Professional and International. Professional competitions are the leagues and clubs as well as continental cups. Those include the English Premier League, English Football Association Cup, the Spanish Primera Liga, Spanish Copa del Rey and so forth. You also get the continental tournaments like the UEFA Champions League (Europe) and the Copa Libertadores (South America) International competition involves the national teams and culminates with the World Cup. You have tournaments for every region of the world -- Euro, Asia, CONCACAF for North America, CONMEBOL for South America and so forth.
  3. Countries competing: European cup held every 4 years in between World cup, Asian Cup for Asian Region, Copa America for American region, African Nation for African region, Gulf Cup for middle east, Conderation Cup held 1 month Before European Cup, and many othes cup.............. Teams: Champions League, Scandavian Cup, Carlsberg Cup, UEFA Cup, Copa Liberatos, Asian Champions League, Intertoto Cup, Countless cup ..................
  4. besides the fifa world cup that is the most important, the next in importance are the euro-cup that is played every 4 years of course by european national teams; and copa america that is played every 2 years by conmebol national teams(south american) and some guests.
  5. There are major championships for most every professional soccer league. For examlpe, the MLS (in the USA) has a regular season champion based on points accumulated during the season. 0-loss, 1-draw and 3-win. There is usually a knock-out tournament as well to determine another championship. This goes for the other leagues around the world based in individual countries, like the Series A & B leagues in Italy. England, Spain, Italy, France and Germany are thought to be the best leagues in Europe. Each region of the world, Oceanic, S Ame, Asia, Africa, N. Ame and Europe also have their own ways of governing soccer and have championships based on countries (like world cup) and have tournaments based on professional teams like, UEFA in Europe. For example The Champions league (via UEFA in Europe) takes the best professional teams in Europe and they play in group and knock-out stages to determine a winner. UEFA also has a Euro Cup to determine the best national soccer team in Europe's region. Most of the regions of the world have their tournament 2 years after the World Cup and have it every 4 years (although there are exceptions like the African Cup of Nations). The professoinal teams (like in UEFA) have a tournament more frequently (like every year) to determine the best professional team in a region. As far as I know there is no tournament to determine the best professional team in the world. Most would feel that the European professional teams would win anyway since they pay their players the most money. That's why you see Ronoldo and Ronoldiniho (sp?) from Brazil playing for Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively. For this reason, the UEFA Champions league is thought of as having the best soccer tournament around. AC Milan is currently playing Barcelona in one semi and Villarreal (from Spain) is playing the English Premier League team of Arsenal in the other. Championship for that one is May 17th in Paris. For each professional championship, go online and try to find each country's top soccer league and they will have more on the particular league championships (knock-out or season play) you are interested in. Hope that helps:)
